Letters Under Rock: A Global Synthesis of Performance Poetry and Spiritual Tradition

An epistolary journey through the sacred landscapes of the Wanderer and the Nomad.

Letters Under Rock by Cindy Rinne and Bory Thach is a collaborative masterwork that functions as both a literary exchange and a multidisciplinary performance piece. Through the voices of two archetypal characters, the authors traverse the geographical and spiritual distances between Morocco, Ireland, the Sahara, India, Japan, and Cambodia. This collection is a rigorous exploration of comparative mythology and interfaith dialogue through the medium of verse.

The Interweaving of Ritual and Cultural Narrative

At the core of this volume is the integration of diverse belief systems into a cohesive poetic tapestry. Rinne and Thach utilize animism and sacred symbolism to anchor their work, offering a profound study of:

  • Ecumenical Spirituality: A seamless blending of Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, the Desert Mothers, and Christian Saints, reflecting a universal search for the divine.

  • Archetypal Performance: The "Wanderer" and the "Nomad" serve as conduits for performance poetry, where movement and ritual are embedded within the text.

  • Symbolic Iconography: From the Cambodian dragon to the Irish swan, the authors employ flora and fauna as tokens of cultural identity and ancestral memory.

Bory Thach was born in a refugee camp located on the border between Thailand and Cambodia. His family immigrated to the United States when he was four years old. He served in the U.S. Army and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received his MFA from California State University San Bernardino. Fiction and creative nonfiction fall under the art of storytelling, while poetry for him is more of a study of language, an art form in itself. His work has been published in Pacific Review, Urban Ivy, Arteidolia, and Sand Canyon Review, as well as Letters Under Rock.

Note: Together, Cindy Rinne and Thach are also both published in We Are Here: Village Poets Anthology by Moonrise Press, edited by Maja Trochimczyk and Marlene Hitt. “Halo” (poem above) was first published by Cloud Women’s Quarterly.
