Outburst of Pain: The Cathartic Architecture of Contemporary Arabic Poetry

A lifelong journey of emotional processing, captured through the transformative lens of the written word.

Outburst of Pain by Nadine Najem is a profound testament to the role of literature as a vehicle for psychological resilience. Chronicling a narrative arc that began in the author's youth, this collection serves as a rigorous study of how poetry functions as an outlet for the complexities of the human condition. Najem’s work transcends simple verse, offering an intimate look at the therapeutic power of creative expression.

The Dialectics of Emotion and Creative Healing

Najem utilizes poetry as a formalist tool to navigate the spectrum of human experience. This collection offers a unique perspective on the Poetics of Catharsis: An exploration of how the act of writing serves as a primary mechanism for processing trauma, sorrow, and profound joy. Najem’s contemporary contribution to Arabic lyricism, blending traditional emotional depth with modern introspective techniques, serves as a documentation of an artist's growth from adolescent reflection to a sophisticated adult understanding of social-emotional intelligence through language.

About the Book

When I was young and feeling sad, I used to write. When I wanted to express my joy, I also wrote. When I was a teenager and alone, I started writing more, I wrote and kept writing. During my studies in music on the university level, I kept writing. While finishing another degree, I, also never stopped writing. Every time I wanted to escape from myself or from the world, I would grab a pen and paper to write.

After writing profusely throughout the years, my words got tired from their papers, and my papers got tired from my desk. They were so fed up with each other that quarrel broke out till I stopped them. I locked them up in a book for them to behave. The paper fell in love with the words and passion ignited. And so, a child of black ink on white paper was conceived, like the black dust of Beirut disappearing under the snow of Lebanon’s cedars.

A creation that speaks in the dialect of my country, expressing itself and myself. I decided to give this child a name thus following in the footsteps of elders from my country, such as Said Akl and Maurice Awad, who honored the Lebanese dialect.

I called it an “Outburst of Pain,” to allow the pen to express every pain.
